We take 24/7 emergency calls, so we see plumbing at its worst — usually at the point where a small problem has finally become a large one. Almost every time, the homeowner tells us the same thing: it had been doing something weird for a while. Here's what 'something weird' usually means.
1. A water bill that climbed for no reason. If your usage jumped and nothing about your household changed, you have a leak somewhere. A running toilet flapper is the cheap version. A slab leak is the expensive one, and in North Texas slab leaks are common enough that an unexplained bill increase is worth investigating immediately.
2. Warm spots on the floor. Walk your slab barefoot. A patch of floor that's noticeably warm — especially in a hallway or along a wall — can mean a hot water line is leaking under the concrete. This one is genuinely urgent.
3. Low pressure at a single fixture. If one faucet is weak and the rest of the house is fine, it's usually an aerator or a supply valve. If pressure drops across the whole house, that's a bigger issue — a failing pressure regulator or a supply line problem.
4. Drains that gurgle. A gurgling drain means air is being pulled through the trap, which usually points to a partial blockage or a venting problem further down the line. It rarely fixes itself and it usually gets worse.
5. Water heater noise. Popping, rumbling, or kettling sounds mean sediment has built up on the bottom of the tank — a real issue with hard Texas water. Sediment makes the heater work harder, shortens its life, and is the prelude to a tank failure that empties forty gallons onto your floor.
6. Any stain on a ceiling or wall. Ever. A brown ring on a ceiling below a bathroom is not cosmetic. Even if it's dry now, it means water got there at least once and the path is still open.
7. A smell you can't place. Sewer gas has a distinct sulfur edge and usually means a dried-out trap or a failed wax ring. It's fixable in an hour — and it's also a sign that something isn't sealed the way it should be.
None of these need to become emergencies. Catching them early is almost always the difference between a service call and a repair project.
